Volume 1: The Getaway
The cool October night air carried the faint scent of rain, a tropical breeze sweeping through the forest preserve on the outskirts of Joliet, Illinois. It was 10 p.m., and the stillness of the wilderness was broken by the pounding footsteps of a young woman. Bloodied and frantic, Lena sprinted through the dense underbrush, her breath ragged and her eyes wide with desperation. The roar of helicopter blades echoed above, cutting through the night, while the distant barks of robotic canine units grew louder.
Her pulse thundered in her ears as she paused, crouching behind a fallen tree. Sweat mixed with the streaks of blood on her face, and she pressed a trembling hand against her side, wincing at the pain. From the distance came the unmistakable mechanical growl of Canine GZ25, its sensors locked onto her trail. The searchlights from the helicopters overhead painted the forest in flickering patches of white light, closing in on her position.
