HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER GOES VIRAL USING RACIAL SLUR

Roger Poling - IBEA Convention

DUBUQUE — A Hempstead High School teacher went viral on social media after a video surfaced of him using the N-word to address a student. The video was recorded by a bystander (identity not confirmed) and posted on social media, where it quickly went viral.

The Teacher has been identified as Mr. Roger Poling and has been placed on administrative leave. The incident sparked outrage from students, parents, and community members, and led to protests outside the school.

Dubuque’s History of racial tension in the schools

A recent study by the Iowa Performance Profile found that black students are more likely to be suspended or expelled from high school than white students. The study also found that black students are less likely to be enrolled in advanced placement classes and more likely to be placed in remedial classes.

These disparities are a result of a number of factors, including racial bias among teachers and administrators, lack of resources in black neighborhoods, and racial segregation in housing.

The Dubuque Community School District says it’s working to address these issues. The district reported it has implemented a number of programs to improve the educational outcomes of black students, including increased teacher training on racial bias, more support for black students in high school, and more funding for black schools.

However, more needs to be done to address racial inequality in Dubuque's high schools. The district needs to continue to invest in more teachers of color, programs that support black students. The district needs to work to create a more inclusive environment for both teachers, faculty and students.

How many more acts of racism must take place before there is significant change. Parents and community members should be welcomed to work on progressive ways to support the marginalized demographic in a predominantly White town.
