Arizona man charged with attempted murder stemming from 2021 assault in Dubuque

Dubuque, Iowa - An Arizona man faces attempted murder and other charges resulting from the beating of a Dubuque woman in June 2021 – a case investigators helped solve after lifting a palm impression from the shifter in the woman's vehicle.

In a significant development in an ongoing criminal case, an Arizona man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a brutal assault that took place in Dubuque in June 2021. The arrest and charges bring renewed attention to the incident, shedding light on the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators of violent crimes to justice. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of diligent investigation and the pursuit of justice, even when significant time has passed.

The Incident

The incident in question dates back to 2021 when a violent assault occurred in the city of Dubuque, Iowa. Court documents state that officers responded at 6:49 p.m. June 25, 2021, to the 3000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue for a report of an injured person. Officers found Breanna M. Hansen, then 30, unconscious on the floor near the kitchen of her residence which have resulted in severe injuries to the victim. The case remained unsolved for a considerable period, but law enforcement agencies continued their investigation, determined to bring the perpetrator to justice. Freddrick T. Woods Jr., 29, of Peoria, Ariz., was arrested at 1:14 A.M. Tuesday.

Charges Filed

Following the arrest, the Arizona man has been charged with attempt to commit murder, willful injury causing serious injury, domestic assault with strangulation, domestic assault with injury, first-degree harassment, child endangerment and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. All charges are serious criminal offenses that carry significant legal consequences if proven guilty. The charges indicate the gravity of the assault and the intent to cause severe harm or take the victim's life. The legal process will now move forward as the accused faces the charges in court. Offenses are alleged and the individual involved is innocent until proven guilty.

Tank and the Bangas brought their eclectic, undefinable amalgam of soul, funk, Hip-hop,  jazz and rock to the Auditorium Theatre last Saturday. They made beautiful music with the Chicago Philharmonic.

The Grammy-nominated New Orleans-based group, led by the incomparable Tarriona “Tank” Ball, did what they always do: ultimately rivet audiences with their dynamic live performance. And Chicago’s “Ferrari of orchestras” was right there with them, step for step.

The Chicago Defender witnessed this one-of-a-kind, live musical mashup between these two virtuosic powerhouses. 

Dianne Feinstein’s Senate Seat filled by Laphonza Butler

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that he will appoint Laphonza Butler to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Dianne Feinstein. Butler is the president of EMILY's List, a group that works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights. She will be the first Black and openly LGBTQ person to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Butler has a long history of working in politics and activism. She served as a senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign in 2020, and before that she was a labor leader. She is also a second-generation fighter for working people and a strong advocate for women and girls.

In a statement, Newsom said that Butler is "the best person to carry on Senator Feinstein's legacy of fighting for the people of California." He added that Butler is "a brilliant advocate for women and girls, workers and unions, and all Californians."

Butler is expected to be sworn in as a senator in the coming weeks. She will serve the remainder of Feinstein's term, which expires in 2024.
