GOOD MORNING SNAP SHOT STARS!
DUBUQUE HIGH SCHOOL INCIDENT MAKES IT TO YOUNG TURKS SHOW INDISPUTABLE W/DR. RASHAD RICHEY
Yes, Indisputable with Dr. Rashad Richey covered the story of a Dubuque teacher who was caught on camera using racial slurs on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. The teacher, who has been publicly identified by students online, Roger Poling. The incident was recorded by a student in the class and later posted on social media.
The Dubuque Community School District condemned the teacher's actions and placed her on administrative leave. The district also said that it would be conducting an investigation into the incident.
Dr. Richey and his co-host discussed the incident on TYT’s Indisputable show. “There is no justification or excuse” Dr. Richey also said that the teachers like this make teachers look bad. He said that the teacher should be fired and that he should never be allowed to teach again.
The school's assistant principal, Julia Jorgenson, said the employee was immediately suspended pending an investigation.
In a message to parents she wrote 'I want to be clear in saying that the actions shown in this video are not acceptable and do not represent the values of Hempstead High School or the Dubuque Community School District.
'I have talked personally with many students and parents today, as have members of our administrative team and staff across the building, to reinforce that we are here to support students today and moving forward' she said.
Adding: 'We strive every day to ensure that each of our students learns in a safe, inclusive learning environment and today, for many, Hempstead did not live up to that expectation.'1
Indisputable co-host Bennie Carollo said “My guess is this is probably not the first time it has happened because if you’re a student, you just don’t randomly film teachers in a hallway. There might have possibly been a reason why that student was filming that particular teacher at that particular moment”
“If someone says this once, they’ve probably thought it a thousand times…”
Dr. Rashad Richey and his co-host both agree that its unusual to investigate when a video exists.
Another takeaway from Bennie Carollo when referring to a statement by the school regarding inclusivity “We should shift our focus away from inclusiveness and more towards empowering…Fundamentally, not firing that teacher right away is a perfect example of things that are not empowering to the people who should be”
Dr. Richey concluded with a quote: “It’s easier to get rid of a good book, than a bad teacher”2
An Additional credit goes to the families of other children in the school who tagged A. Alanda Gregory and Carla Anderson (writers for BIPOC News of the Tri-State). Because of Carla’s active engagement on Twitter, her mentioning news outlets about the story helped bring national awareness to an ongoing problem that shouldn’t have to be proven on camera before it’s addressed. Good work Duchess! Now it’s time to get Roland S. Martin and the Black Star Network3
